Crows
Doruntina Vinca
Crows by Doruntina Vinca is an experimental literary project that interlaces personal memory, cultural mythology, and natural history. Presented as a hybrid essay, it blends recollections of growing up in Prishtina during the 1990s with an exploration of crows as "companion species" (Donna Haraway) within a shared psycho-geographic space. The narrative oscillates between scientific observations, cultural myths, and evocative personal associations, unraveling the interconnected layers of history, memory, and the non-human world.
Vinca draws upon myths and folklore, as well as ethological insights, to depict crows as both mirrors and participants in human histories. Anchored in an eco-critical perspective, the work moves beyond anthropocentrism to examine memory and heritage through the lens of shared existence with non-human species. By positioning crows as guides, Vinca offers a reframed narrative of collective memory that integrates ecological and cultural consciousness.
Doruntina Vinca's HS fellowship took the form of a writer's residency, during which she worked on her creative non-fiction project, Crows. Below you may read an excerpt of the essay that was written during the residency. Vinca is currently working on expanding this project into a book. Please contact us for further information.
